The Battle of Antietam Creek, 1862, is known as the bloodiest single day in American history. One year before Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee fought to a standoff against the Union army. There were 23,100 casualties; the Piper House and barn were used as a field hospital where Confederate and Union soldiers were treated.
